Al-Malam locality is a geographical historical, and commercial center for the northern regions of South Darfur. It is the land where Sultan Ali Dinar, the last Sultan of the Fur kingdom who ruled Darfur as an independent state until 1916, was born and raised. During Darfur conflict in 2003, Al Malam locality suffered extensive damage and destruction, particularly affecting three of its administrative units, resulting in the majority of its residents fleeing to displacement camps while some remained near the ruins of their burnt villages.
At the beginning of 2017, through peace-building programs initiated by MDPD via Women Peace Ambassadors and the Peace Committee, displaced individuals began to return to their homes in Al-Malam and its administrative units, particularly in Kaila and Turba.
Following the outbreak of the current conflict on April 15, 2023, Al-Malam locality became a refuge for many of its residents who were living in Al Fasher and Neyala. Additionally, it hosted a significant number of displaced persons from both Al Fasher and Neyala, as well as refugees from South Sudan.
On February 8, 2026, Malam Darfur Peace and Development distributed 1,000 food baskets to 1,000 needy families across five neighborhoods: Al-Abasiya, Al-Thawra, Al-Mustaqbal, Al-Qadesya, and Al-Malam South.
As the locality struggles to host large number of displaced individuals, humanitarian organizations remain scarce. This convoy represents the largest food aid delivered to the locality since the outbreak of the war in April 2023.
