Phase one: the pottery as a workshop and educational facility

At this stage, the core program venue will be a pottery, which is a space that hosts educational workshops in 3D printing clay, making it possible for anyone to learn how to produce technological, functional, or sculptural ceramics. The workshops will give people the tools and skills to produce beautiful customized ceramics using only quality, environmentally safe clay and glazes. These workshops will be carried out by Emerging Objects (a think tank company specialized in 3d printing) in conjunction with Print Farm lab from the School of Architecture at UC Berkeley.

Phase two: the pottery as a permanent space

Upon completion of phase one, where the community is expected to be equipped with requisite skill set, it is then time to transition and invest in their learning outcomes. For that purpose, we and the community together will build a permanent facility from 3d printed objects. This facility will become a design manufactory for ceramic innovation where craft and tradition come together with state-of-the-art technology.

In a much more border goal, we think that empowering this community with this skill set not only would help them to produce ceramic objects and access markets, but also equip them with a rare knowledge to build their own architecture. We believe in the potential of this technology, as we have demonstrated through research at Emerging Objects, to build houses with humble materials such as clay. We also believe that this project can serve as a pilot for the implementation of similar facilities across the region.

Phase three: the pottery as a digital-tangible market platform

At this phase, the pottery as an eco-Industrial marketplace will emerge as a woven- together structure of new building technologies, new stories, and new digital-tangible marketplaces. The same is targeted to be achieved via:

A physical marketplace for everyday exchange of art work. A workshop and workplan to connect with global markets, taking advantage of excess outbound freight capacity to create exports that bring capital into these communities. Potential products include 3d printed dishes, vases, furniture, interior lighting installations…. etc.

Through the digital platform, anyone around the world can directly purchase and order their products. For the community, all financial exchange will be executed through mobile phone technology, with a focus on direct product exchange in order to operate within the full-time employment restrictions.
