MDPD and USAID completed Solar-Powered Water Pumping Yard
After its notable success in achieving multiple water well projects, MDPD and USAID have recently completed another project funded generously by the USAID to establish one of the most needed vital projects in Kaila, a small village in Northern South Darfur State where group of returnees has recently returned to their village as part of MDPD returning process.
The entire project took around six months to be completed and water was tested to make sure it
fulfills all the standards for drinking water and domestic usage. Also, the water yard has been powered by solar panels that provide electricity to the pumping, lighting and other services, the total direct and indirect beneficiaries are estimated to be around 17 thousands citizens.
The Returnees populations around Kaila are part of a bigger group of returnees influxes that facilitated by MDPD during the last year, including Toroba, Shawaia, Magboula and the returnees in Kaila.
A number of additional water wells powered by solar energy will be constructed in the upcoming years as part of MDPD’s new agreement with the Islamic Development Bank that is expected to cover the need for fresh water for a larger population in South Darfur State.
Now, with generous funding from the King Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Action, MDPD is implementing the first phase of water projects in the four villages of Al-Malam: Al-Malam, Keila, Turbah and Um Dasho. The project includes 14 wells to provide drinking water, 10 wells to provide irrigation water for agriculture, in addition to harvesting the waters of valleys and small rivers through the implementation of a comprehensive project to harvest water and build reservoirs.
